The Lighting Difference

We are often asked what is the difference in the light quality between Induction and other forms of lighting, and people often think we are exaggerating when we tell them it is clearly visible so we have made this little video for you to judge the difference

LOST

image001.jpgNot the TV show, but the journey that takes you on a path. If you look
at today’s market-place it is in turmoil, according to your neighbors and according to the media. My friend Bruce Karasik pointed out that there are really other things to be thankful for. http://www.goodnewsfriday.com/ . When did you realize things are bad related to the general world economy? By now you might see that in the Eco or Green world a revelation is occurring. More for the ‘productization’ towards economic solutions and rehabilitation of innovation and technical ideas that are of a greater economical supplanting of opportunity than that of just Green-washed - Green marketing habits by large corporations seeking your dollar.

What a huge and broad sweep. However, this particular blog is addressing what we should have been doing all these years and are just realizing now (read Thomas Friedman; Hot Flat and Crowded). Consumption is the root of the consumer’s assumption that if some one tells me it is good then buy it then need more then buy more. DON”T continue down the path of purchasing because it must be good. Know why you purchase and look to the smaller guy that has through innovation and passion brought the answer to you. i.e. local farmers markets that the community is part of keep those dollars in the community and brings the freshest of produce to you neighborhood. American innovation and collaboration is what built big business. Big business is what at many times crushed small American innovation and competition.

Think of the first Oil Barron families that made powered vehicles a
possibility. Where did we begin to rely on others or have the big
American company crush the spirit of the small innovator to bring a
powerful solution to a leading innovative country?

Green ads for energy companies say that they promote clean energy, hardware stores encourage you to buy green and large auto makers say if you buy our new hybrids it’s all good. STOP. Ask yourself as the consumer why you are getting so mad at the generally economy, the politicians and big businesses that say buy green now, you spend more and you pay later.

We are actually, spending now, paying for it later in a negative sense and not realizing that what our parents and teachers told us was right.
TURN OFF THE LIGHTS WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THE ROOM. Just a big hint as to how to save at home or in your office.

image002.jpg

A 50 million dollar plane and a 1 million dollar office remodel, the
abduction of monies from charitable Jewish causes and the big oil companies that some how were able to make gas cheaper because some storm just did not happen all says STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Be innovative and look for the solution - it is in front of you, In front of me. I found one (www.adgecolp.com )

This blog is not a shout out, nor a shame-on big companies. It is a
simple request for all of us to take a look at how we operate. If you own a large factory, would you not want to find the way to reduce your energy bill while not compromising your demand levels? The power company will not help you get there like a small business will. (
http://sba.gov/) That Small business is more in tune with saving dollars than large companies. The bottom line though process is more significant to the survival of the American Family that the large company that employs the masses. I challenge you to find a solution and tell me, tell a friend. A small business that seeks to come up with the resolve is the solution.

Our energy crisis is on the verge of ending if the masses that make the decisions are ready to once again listen to the small guy. Are you one of them or are you LOST?

I’ll end this blog with a series of names, Hewlett/ Packard, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Nikola Tesla, (http://www.teslasociety.com/biography.htm)
Thomas Jefferson, Jerry Schneiderman, Verne Harnish, Thomas Friedman; Hot Flat and Crowded.

Auto Dealership and Lighting, Where is the savings?

It is the New Year. President Barack Obama is into a regiment now as he
sits in the oval office. The nation speaks about the economy,
opportunities and energy savings. Now here is a mixed bag. If you look
carefully in the attached photos, Rusnak BMW of Thousand Oaks just built
a brand “efficient” building. Their boast is about being one of the top
dealers; they spent around 40 million dollars creating the huge internal
auto dealer off the 101 freeway. I guess some one forgot to tell them
that if they are going to turn the light on and burn 19200 watts per KWH
they should do that at night, not 5 days in a row. By the way, we know
they should only burn 9200 watts per KWH at night anyway. There is no
regulation yet suspending the “green effects” of metal halide and sodium
vapor lights at auto dealerships. Oh well. (happy oil well)

http://www.rusnakbmw.com/About-Us.aspx Why are the lights are ON in the
middle of the day? (see photos below)

Good for our clients that use Induction Lighting to Save big Dollars.
Maybe Rusnak will call us too and learn more.

We also compiled a study several months ago for a major car dealership
in the same area. They will save $100,000 + per year by replacing
lights. Check back with our blog when we post who this is and other
success stories.

Live Work Loft is Eco Friendly

This story appeared in h. As an Advising Developer to Creative Environments I thought it would be appropriate to share as part of our Eco blog.

Creative Environments of Hollywood
Posted on 09. Feb, 2009 by Administrator in Lifestyle
by Jason Dean
When Jerry Schneiderman surveys the urban landscape of Los Angeles, he sees it contracting. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’s never been a shortage of grousing over the time Angelinos spend driving from home to work and back again. Scientific studies have been conducted to measure how many life-years are lost in the concrete cattle crawl-be it on freeways, surface streets, or a combination of both.
“Over the next ten to twenty years, L.A. is going to look more like Tokyo,” predicts Schneiderman, whose company Creative Environments of Hollywood (CEH) specializes in converting existing buildings to fit modern usage demands. The idea of hybrid live/work spaces is not new - it’s just been updated for the times. In other parts of the world, where available space is more finite, survival in an urban environment has depended on such duality.
Schneiderman’s company has taken existing buildings, some nearly a century old, and turned them into hip enclaves tailored for the young, creative professional. “People want the freedom to set the hours they work,” says Schneiderman. But they also prefer an interactive and collaborative setting where they can bounce ideas off one another. We keep the space as flexible as possible. The more we build in, the less they like it. There is no cottage cheese ceiling, no built-in closets. We keep it as open as possible; tenants create their own spaces.”
One such site, Cosmo Lofts, located in the heart of revitalized Hollywood, was a furniture warehouse in a previous life. The new design celebrates the building’s functional past by highlighting the original concrete floors, high ceilings, and fluted columns. Narrow spiral staircases wrap around steel support beams, leading to open lofts. A windowed wall welcomes all the natural light the sky has to offer, and there’s a clear view of the beckoning Hollywood Hills.
The CEH offices are located at Lacy Studio Lofts in Lincoln Heights, one of L.A. County’s oldest districts. Vice-Chairman Howard Sadowsky gives me a guided tour of the compound. The main building, he reveals, previously housed a strip club. As I skillfully sidestep the ghosts of pole dancers past, Sadowsky takes me to the construction arm of the operation, where CEH makes its own steel. This allows the company to reap the added benefit of using a stronger, more durable material at a much lower cost: about the same price as using wood. “A lot of companies outsource, but we decided to do it in-house,” he explains with palpable pride.
The target demographic for these units, Sadowsky says, is young, creative types who are drawn to the city for its stimulating mix of variety and convenience. “They’re buying a community environment, where they can share ideas, business to business,” he says. And don’t expect to find an on-site gym anywhere. “What we do is very much a reflection of what our tenants want.” Classical and neo-classical architecture and buildings with a colorful history trump the tricked-out modern amenities.
Another CEH property, Westmoreland Lofts, is situated about halfway between Hollywood and Downtown. The building’s industrial character pays tribute to its past as a fabric dyeing factory and warehouse. Original factory windows and skylights deliver sweeping city views and generous natural light.
Schneiderman tells me L.A.’s Adaptive Reuse Ordinance has been a major reason CEH has been able to update close to 1 million square feet of real estate. The ordinance does not require adding disabled access features as a contingent to remodeling. Adding an elevator and still preserving the architectural integrity of some buildings, he says, is just not feasible.
The beauty of providing floor plans that are open rather than compartmentalized is that tenants are free to make the space their own. “One tenant built his entire loft with a floor of Plexiglas,” Schneiderman says. To maximize the work aspect of the space, renters will adapt their living quarters to suit their needs. “[Another] built an entire rolling bedroom that was suspended from the ceiling and could roll from one side to the other, complete with dividers.” A third unit has been customized with a bed that can be lowered electronically from the ceiling.
“Living at the office” used to describe people who sacrificed their personal lives in a futile attempt to catch up to an insurmountable work load. Today, it implies the savvy metropolitan chic of those who work smart and integrate high productivity into their daily lives. “The economy-and our way of life-is changing,” Schneiderman assures me. “Eliminating long commutes and minimizing our dependence on the volatile fuel market is essential if we want to compete with the rest of the world.”
My conclusion is that reuse is very eco minded especially when a firm functions like this. ADG Eco’s team prides itself working with entities that respect the environment and do all that is necessary to conserve.

Do We Need Business Advice on being More ‘Eco’nomical?

Brilliant lighting architect, savvy deal maker and environmentally conscious citizen, my client and friend, Gerald Olesker, President of the Architectural Detail Group and I regularly talk about how we can work with companies to be more environmentally aware - and we look for ways to monetize green opportunities. Below is some business advice that Gerald recently shared with me.

Beginning of Contributor Notes:

On January 20th 2009, Barack Obama became President of these United States. He has given us a charge to once again continue to be the most prosperous Nation on Earth, and in his inaugural address, he directed the American People to “pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off to remake America”.
There is a significant challenge, a large and measurable charge and a new opportunity to strive for success as individuals, corporations and a nation as a whole. What does this mean for the 21st century where we speak about “alternative energy sources” along with “Eco and sustainable practices” in business? Collectively, people use the term green without understanding its economic impact and with a hope that there is an environmental impact.

Ask yourself this group of questions; who, what, how, when, where and why, prior to engaging in Eco activity. If you are a business leader it is about the impact to your bottom line. If you are an environmentalist it is about the impact to the world around you and if you are a government leader it is about the needs of your communities with an impact to the government itself. I ask you to think about the challenge now placed before us by President Obama - Accountability.

Yesterday, as I (Gerald) began to analyze these questions and realized that Eco, (the first three letters of Economy) can be defined as Economy is to economize and Economy as are the Economic factors that drive us as a whole. Melding these definitions together is an Economical solution to our Economic problems. Parts of those solutions are reducing consumption to fulfill the bottom line needs of business and government. These needs are powered by our use of energy. Alternative energy is only an alternative source by definition, but reducing energy needs at the source responds to the above 6 questions.

Who is responsible? We all are

What is our responsibility? To engage in activity and resolutions that will reduce our need and dependence for foreign oil while enhancing our bottom line economically.

How do we achieve these goals? By setting specific milestones and encouraging small business to respond and big business to be responsive.

When do we provide a resolution? Right now. Many companies are innovating to address these needs. For example The Architectural Detail Group created an economical solution to reduction needs with lighting through induction lighting technology.

Where do we need to implement these strategies? Every commercial, retail and industrial location including parking lots, streets and parks needs the strategy.

Why do we need to be more ‘Eco’nomical? If we are not, we have failed as a world economic leader Acceptance is that the challenges and opportunities for success to be deployed as our new administration takes office can be implemented by small business and big business immediately.

Take action today that impacts the bottom line by not consuming large quantities of energy (like lighting with induction lamps) will bring an incredible stimulus economically and opportunities large and small.

“Why” is both a rhetorical question and a challenge to change. Accept the challenge; invest in solutions, be part of the solutions of Eco and sustainability that impact the environment and the people and our businesses. Challenge yourselves and challenge others; hold each other accountable to invest ‘Eco’nomically

Joel’s thoughts:

1. Gerald’s business advice is good: be a good citizen and adopt environmentally friendly actions.

2. Ask the question: “How can I monetize (or dollarize) this opportunity?” The outcome, if you think about environmental issues will be smart and it will blend your passion for green with more green. It is similar to how Gerald created induction lighting technology. Caring about green produces more green.

3. Finally, if you want kick around some environmental thoughts or ideas, don’t hesitate to call Gerald directly.
